D.C. Special Police Officer Fatally Shot During Training

D.C. Metro Special Police Officer Maurica Manyan was shot and killed when a retired lieutenant fired his weapon during a training exercise at the Anacostia Library.

A Washington, D.C., special police officer was shot and killed during a training exercise at a library Thursday.

The incident happened at about 3:30 p.m. at Anacostia Library, WUSA-TV reports. A retired D.C. Metropolitan Police Department lieutenant was running an ASP Baton training session at the library at the time.

During the session, the lieutenant pulled his weapon and fired it. The lieutenant's shot fatally struck a 25-year-old officer, Maurica Manyan.

When police officers arrived at the scene, Manyan was unresponsive. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Manyan had worked as a special police officer with the library. The D.C. Metro Special Police Department is a private law enforcement agency authorized by the district.

According to WTTG-TV, the retired lieutenant—Jesse Porter, 58—has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. The shooting is still under investigation.
